WINNING STREAKS GROW: Iowa City, City High and St. Albert, Council Bluffs made it 19th straight wins and Armstrong-Ringsted upped its current win streak to 14 games, for the longest current victory strings in the state. Iowa City, City High blanked Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 21-0; St. Albert swamped Underwood, 48-7, and Armstrong-Ringsted defeated Graettinger-Terrill, 40-12 in a battle of undefeated teams. Other regular season and conference win streaks that increased last night. Among those continuing win streaks of regular season games were: Clear Lake (28), North Tama, Traer (27), Emmetsburg (24), Iowa City, City High (24), West Branch (22); and Marion (20). Meanwhile Harlan Community rallied for 21 fourth quarter points to overcome a 14-0 deficit in a district triumph that snapped Lewis Central’s 16-quarter streak of holding opponents scoreless. It was the Cyclones’ 52nd consecutive district win. West Lyon moved its district streak to 35 games with by nudging Hartley-Melvin- Sanborn, 20-17. St. Albert, Council Bluffs (29), Bishop Heelan, Sioux City (29), Stanton (26), Solon (25), Iowa City, City High (24) and Madrid (22) also extended consecutive district win chains.
PERFECTS ARE DONE: Bettendorf defeated North Scott, 19-10 and the 10 points allowed made them the last team to have stayed unbeaten and unscored upon. The Dogs have now outscored 5 foes 159-10.
47 TEAMS STILL WITHOUT A LOSS: After last night 13 teams tumbled from the ranks of the undefeated leaving 47 with unblemished records (compared to 48 a year ago and 44 in 2008). Five of the 13 lost to another undefeated team. The ‘Unbeatens” by class follow:

MILESTONE FOR MCCOY: Bedford’s Bob McCoy reached the 200-win plateau last night when his team romped past Riverside, Oakland, 53-0.. Now in is 32nd year, McCoy has a career mark of 200-124, all at Bedford, where he has coached the Bulldogs to 13 playoff appearances including the 1992 title and runner-up in 1998.
STATE’S OLDEST RIVALRIES: Two of the state’s oldest rivalries met last night. Des Moines East and Des Moines North teed it up for the 108th straight year last night with East winning 41-24. That gave the Scarlet a 72-28-8 edge in the series, which is Iowa’s longest continuous rivalry. It originated in 1903, some 14 months before the IHSAA was founded in December 1904. Waterloo West and Waterloo East went nose-to-nose for the 101st time, with Qwest winning 23-21. Their classic started in 1909 and West now has a 48-45-8 edge in the series.
A SPECIAL HONOR: The list of the IHSAA inductees into the Football Players’ Hall of Fame and the Iowa Football Coaches Association list of inductees for the coaches have been released. Both groups will be honored at the halftime of the Class 4A Championship Game, November 19. The players are (senior year in parens): Paul Laaveg, Belmond (1965-66), Mike Courey, Bishop Heelan, Sioux City (1976-77), Todd Twachtmann, Marion (1982-1983), Dennis Gibson, Ankeny, (1981-82), Michael Burger, Harlan Community (1993-94); and Tim Dwight, Iowa City, City High (1993-94). The honored IFBCA coaches include Claude Post, Belmond; Dave Jacobson, West Delaware and North Scott; and Randy Scott, Bettendorf.

DOUBLE THREAT: In the last week we have broaden the offensive categories on Quikstats. There are now two Total Offense categories: the old one (for you Warrick Dunn fans) that combined pass receiving and rushing yards, and the new one which is the conventional passing and rushing yards. Sioux City East’s Alex Imming is the state leader in passing and rushing and he chalked up 139 ground yards and four TDS and 175 thru the air with two scoring strikes in East’s 40-13 win over Sioux City North. . . Kingsley-Pierson’s Tate Rhode passed for 188 yards and five scores and ran for 124 yards and two TDs as the Panthers eclipsed River Valley, Correctionville, 66-22
NEW 4A RECEVING KING: Quenton James of Sioux City East took over as the new Class 4A leader in career receptions and yards as the Black Raiders overwhelmed Sioux City North, 40-13. James grabbed 10 passes for 143 yards, upping his career totals to 174 receptions for 2,434 yards, allowing him to overtake Cedar Rapids Washington’s Keenan Davis who had 169 catches for 2,393 yards, from 200-6-08. James receptions rank third best all-time in all classes and his receiving yards is seventh. His 23 career receiving TDs trails Davis and Marshalltown’s Jarred Carlson who share the 4A lead with 26.
SCHWENCK’S CAREER LADDER: Michael Schwenk singed Boyer Valley for 399 aerial yards and seven TDs as Coon Rapids-Bayard bested the Bulldogs 67-44. Schwenck clicked on 38 of 55 passing attempts and also rushed for 72 yards and a TD. The senior now had 389 career completions (second all-time in Iowa behind CR-B’s Johnny Schwaller, 506 from 2005-08); 4,987 yards (fourth best all-time); and 90 touchdowns, which is second best in Iowa – four behind Schwaller and eighth on the national list. His completions are sixth on the national list kept by the NFHS.
BIG TIME EFFICIENCY: Alex Carr of Cedar Rapids Washington scored the first five times he touched the ball in Cedar Rapids Washington’s 62-7 shellacking of Dubuque Senior. On the first play from scrimmage he ran 80 yards for a score. L:ater he had a 13-yard scoring run, a 59-yard TD pass from A.J. Puk; a 36-yard run and another 13-yard dash to the end zone. He wound up with four carries for 142 yards.
RUSH TIME: Madrid’s freight train rushing attack piled up 648 yards (ninth highest in Iowa annals) in their 49-14 win over Van Meter. Timon Bell rolled up 357 yards and three TDs on 27 carries, while Jeremy Johnson added 152 yards and two scores. . .Andrew Utterback carried 34 times for 276 yards and three touchdowns as Sigourney/Keota topped Davis County, Bloomfield, 20-8. . .Austin Ebertowski smoked Sioux City West for five TDs and 239 rushing yards as Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln mauled the Wolverines, 74-14. . . Norwalk’s Zach Crain scored twice and rushed for 252 yards as the Warriors defeated ADM, Adel 34-25. . . Emmetsburg’s Andrew Wellick scored four times and rushed for 223 yards in a 41-6 thrashing of South O’Brien, Paullina . . . Wes Burnside rushed 15 times for 221 yards and four TDs as Union Community, LaPorte City mangled Anamosa 69-0. . . Jake Osborn darted for 253 yards and four TDs in leading Oskaloosa to a 40-21 victory over Keokuk, who got 229 rushing yards from Elliott Vandenberg. . . Central City got 258 rushing yards and a score from Justin Kerscher in a 36-28 edging of Springville
AIRING IT OUT: Jace Engstler (30 of 46) of Garner-Hayfield passed for six touchdowns and 429 yards as the Cardinals bombed Nashua-Plainfield, 40-6. Three of his scoring aerials found Josh Thompson who had 186 receiving yards . . . Levi Peters clicked on 12 of 16 passes for 303 yards and three TDs to lead Fort Dodge past Ames, 30-28. He also ran for a score and 89 yards. . . Ames’ Kyle Anderson was 12 of 22 for 268 yards and two TDs while also rushing for132 yards and a pair of scores in the same game. . . Charles Rogers riddled Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s defense for 291 aerial yards and three TD strikes in Iowa City West’s 45-16 win. . . Southeast Polk sophomore Kyle Starcevich tossed three TD passes and completed 20 of 34 attempts for 265 yards as the Rams narrowly missed upsetting Dowling Catholic, 24-23. . . Brandon Young completed 10 of 14 passes for 253 yards and two scores as West Branch routed Wapello, 46-6. . . Pella Christian quarterback Kyle Nikkel flipped three TD passes, two to Trey Hugen, as he completed 12 of 14 for 185 yards as the Eagles topped previous unbeaten Interstate 35, Truro, 42-8. . . Luke Schafer hit on 10 of 14 passes for 178 yards and four scores as East Mills dashed past South Page, College Springs, 62-6
TAKING IT TO THE HOUSE: Following are a few of the players who got into last night’s TD parade. Connor O’Brien raced for six TDs and 178 yards rushing in Wapsie Valley’s 48-0 white-washing of Northeast, Goose Lake . . . Johnston’s Nathan DePenning tallied five touchdowns in a 42-7 defeat of Indianola. . . Jed Carpenter found the end zone five times on rushes en rout to 171 yards as West Monona decisioned Westwood, 35-20. . .Kraig Alesch ran to pay dirt four times in Remsen-Union’s 70-0 spanking of Whiting . . . Ben Buffington scored four times on short runs in Newman Catholic, Mason City’s 58-7 pasting of Grundy Center
GETTING THEIR KICKS: Michael Schmadeke kicked field goals of 47, 33 and 27 yards as Columbus Catholic, Waterloo defeated Denver, 30-13. Logan Petersen kicked a 21 yard field goal late in the fourth q1uarter allowed Gladbrook-Reinbeck to top South Hamilton 15-14 . . . Waterloo West got a 25-yard field goal from Alen Kajtezovic with 23 seconds remaining to edge Waterloo East 23-21. . . West Delaware’s Mike Bohlke kicked field goals of 32, 24 and 39 yards in a 28-7 win over Charles City.
BIG RETURNS: Newton’s Zach Roskilly return a kick-off 99 yards for the TD in the Cardinals 24-10 triumph over Perry . . . Cody Keul returned an interception 68 yards for a touchdown and helped Waukee to a 24-6 win over Mason City. . . North Tama got 155 yards rushing and two TDs from Brendon Boerm who also returned a punt 82 yards for a score in a 21-14 edging of Valley community, Elgin. . . East Union sprung Ryan Bryson on a 78-yard TD interception return and also a 75 yard kick-off return to go with two other scores in a 58-32 triumph over Lamoni. . . Collins-Maxwell-Baxter used a 71 yard punt return by Josh Zeiser and a 59-yard return of a fumble to hand Roland-Story its first loss, 14-12. . . Zac Schleuger had a 65-yard punt return and a 35-yard interception return both for scores in West Hancock’s 35-0 blanking of North Iowa. . . Moravia had three returns for TDs in their 63-0 smothering of Meskwaski Settlement School. Tyler McDanel had punt returns of 54 and 63 yards and Chris Bird took an aerial theft back 28 yards. McDanel also scored on a 7 yard run and a 58 yard pass reception
FULL NIGHT: Armstrong-Ringsted got a big night from Spencer Clausen in a 40-12 win over Graettinger-Terril in a match up of undefeated teams. Clausen threaded 11 of 17 passes for 180 yards and three scores, rushed 80 yards and a touchdown and also pilfered two G-T aerials. . . Grandview Park Baptist’s Colby Burt rushed for three touchdowns and 139 yards, passed for 124 yards and another score and intercepted three passes in a 35-12 victory over Seymour. . . Northeast Hamilton’s Marcus Mechaelsen ran for three TDs and hit Clay Herreld on 21, 60 and 35 yard strikes in a 55-36 conquest of Tripoli. . . West Marshall’s Dalton Ferch had TD grabs of 40, 48 and 44 yards and blocked a potential North Polk go-ahead field goal in the final six seconds in a 27-26 win.
