TACKLE CANCER GAME: The Mount Ayr Raider football team OBSERVES Homecoming and a special game Friday when they face West Central Valley, Stuart. The game has been designated as the TACKLE CANCER game, and the Raiders hope to use the excitement of homecoming to help raise money for the fight against cancer. The football team will be wearing pink jerseys that have been custom made specifically for this occasion. Fans will have an opportunity to purchase the jerseys at the annual Jersey Auction, which will be held in the high school gym on Thursday, Sept 30 at 6:30 pm. The jersey auction is the main fundraiser for the football program each year. Fans bid for the right to wear a player’s jersey on the day of the homecoming game. This year, the fans will be bidding to become the owner of the jersey. After the game, the jerseys will be washed and given to the buyer. The football team has solicited area businesses and individuals to “sponsor” a jersey by paying the $45 purchase price. This will enable the entire auction proceeds to be donated toward the fight against cancer. To date over 115 sponsors have signed on to help raise funds for the Tackle Cancer game. The players will also be wearing pink socks, pink mouthpieces, and have pink helmet decals for this special event. In addition, the field at Raider Stadium will feature pink markings. The cheerleaders will be throwing pink footballs into the crowd after scores and using pink pompons that night, and several other school and community organizations are expected to take part in the pink promotion as well. In addition to the jersey auction, the football program will be selling a commemorative TACKLE CANCER t-shirt and pink Raider football hats to help raise money for this worthwhile cause. The student council has gotten involved by choosing “Fight Like a Raider” as the 2010 homecoming theme.
GETTING A KICK OUT OF KICKING: HARLAN COMMUNITY’S TRENT WENDT now has 150 career PAT kicks fourth best behind 151 by Kyle Martin, Harlan Community, 2001-03; 153 by Nate Kaeding, Iowa City West, 1997-99; and 170 by Andrew Hanson, Ottumwa, 2001-04. He is also ninth all-time with 171 points by kicking. Kaeding is first with 216. Three are tied for sixth at 179 – Logan Rees of Valley, WDM, 2001-03; Billy Cundiff, Harlan Community, 1995-97; and Kyle Schlicher, Ankeny, 1999-2001. Jamie Martin, Harlan Community, 1998-2000, is fifth at 184.
WHERE JAMES RANKS OVERALL: When Quenton James of Sioux City East took over the Class 4A career receptions (174) and yards (2,434) and third in TD receptions (23) through Sept. 25, we got questions of where he ranks overall. ESDOHR ON THE MOVE ALSO: JACOB ESDOHR receiver and kicker for Coon Rapids-Bayard is also moving up the Iowa career lists. With 16 TD receptions (state leader all classes) this fall his career total is at 28 (fourth best), his 137 receptions ranks third, and his 1,774 receiving yards is fourth all-time. In PAT kicking he has 128 (fourth highest) and his career points by kicking is 170, which is third best. Thirteen more receptions will put him in a tie with former teammate Tyler Boeke at 150; seven more TD receptions will move him into third; and he needs 257 additional receiving yards to take over third.
TD THROWING TRIO MOVING ON 8-PLAYER STANDARDS: MICHAEL SCHWENK of Coon Rapids-Bayard already has 90 career TD passes, four shy of tying Johnny Schwaller of CR-B, 2005-08 and with a typical game Friday against Walnut could become the all-time leader. Schwaller currently is tied for fifth on the national list. Ankeny Christian Academy’s TIM OLEJNICZAK currently has 70 TD passes and ROBERT BINGHAM of Melcher-Dallas has 68 to occupy sixth and seventh respectively on the Iowa list. Schwenk, with 4,987 yards, needs only 17 more to become the fourth Iowa 8-player passer to go over 5,000 career yards. Schwaller is the all-time leader with 6,085 followed by Stanton Chris Palmquist (5,531 in 2006-08), and East Mills’ Jake Bolton (5,003, 2007-09). Olejniczak and Bingham have thrown for 4,625 and 4,373 yards respectively to land in Iowa’s top seven. Each of the trio is listed in Iowa’s top five all-time and the national top ten list in career completions – Schwenk 389 (second); Bing
ham 332 (fourth) and Olejniczak 320 (fifth).
NOT TO FORGET CROSS COUNTRY, 4A GOLF: Amidst the flurry that always accompanies football is that Iowa’s cross country teams are having a great fall season just as is Class 4A golfers. Golf districts will be Tuesday (October 5) with the State Meet at The Harvester near Rhodes on October 8 and 9. State individual and team qualifiers will be posted on the IHSAA wed site, Tuesday night. Cross Country teams are preparing for upcoming meets especially the Districts/Regionals on October 21 to determine the qualifiers for the 31st Annual Joint Boys and Girls Championship at Lakeside Golf Course, north of Fort Dodge on October 30. This year’s meets marks the 80th state cross country championship for the IHSAA and the 44th for the girls, both among the longest running state association run meets in America.
