iahsaa.org: 2010 Preseason Football Notes

2010 preseason football notes from iahsaa.org:

First Year of New Re-classification

This fall marks the first year of a new two-year re-classification of districts. These changes occur to take into account changes in school enrollment, sharing programs, whole grade sharing, etc. All told from the 2008 scheme, there are 56 total changes, which include two new programs (Meskwaki Settlement School, which played a schedule last year in 8-Player, and Woodward Academy, which is fielding a Class 1A team.)

There are 47 schools in Class 4A; 64 teams in each 3A, 2A, and 1A; 51 teams in Class A and 65 in 8-Player for a total of 355. The total represent a decrease of 1 in 4A (Newton goes to 3A); the number in classes 3A, 2A and 1A remain the same; a decrease of 7 is in Class A, and there is an increase of 6 in 8-player over the 2009 to this fall.

Program/Name Changes

Alta/Aurelia is sharing football and will compete in Class 1A. Alta was in Class A last year ago and Aurelia in 8-Player. They will be the Warriors. The two schools shared in baseball this summer.

EHK-Exira is the designation for Elk Horn Kimballton-Exira. The played 8-player a year ago but enrollment moved the Spartans to Class A.

Meskwaki Settlement School helped complete several 8-player schools’ schedules last fall and the Warriors play continue in 8-player.

Nishnabotna started during track with the sharing of the Farragut and Hamburg programs. They remain in 8-player and are called the Blue Devils.

Ridge View is the official name of what used to be Buffalo Ridge and still represents Galva-Holstein and Schaller-Crestland. The team mascot/nickname is Raptors and they are in Class 1A.

South Central Calhoun is a merger of the Southern Cal, Lake City and Rockwell City-Lytton programs. Both schools were in Class A last year, but their combined enrollment moves them to Class 2A. The new program has adopted the mascot/nickname of Titans.

Woodward Academy is fielding its first football team. The Knights are in Class 1A.
